Alfre Woodard first met her now-husband, Roderick Spencer, in the early 80s. They started dating soon after and got married in 1983.
In an interview with People, the notable actress stated that getting married to Roderick was “the best thing” she ever did.
“I’ve been fortunate enough that we have continued to find that we learn best together,” she shared. “There’s always been a strong artistic connection between us,” Alfre continued.
Alfre and Roderick share two children: a daughter named Mavis and a son named Duncan. Alfre later revealed that the key to her long-lasting marriage is understanding that they “speak the same language” a.k.a in tune with each other’s needs and feelings.
“First, it was just us and the things that we love and what we wanted in the world,” Alfre shared about how their relationship evolved. “And now it’s the project of being copartners with our children in their lives,” she concluded.

The award-winning actress told Essence that Roderick is “a brilliant writer.” The funny thing is, Alfre asked her husband to write the script for the 2019 movie Juanita, which she starred in!
“I said I don’t need an anniversary, birthday, or Christmas present,” Alfre recalled. “I said, just write this script for me,” she laughed.
The 12 Years A Slave actress also claimed she “knew that he would be able to find Juanita in a way that I could really inhabit her.”
